Hamam guide
Turkish bath vs spa: what's the difference?
Both involve warmth, water and a massage, so a hamam and a spa are easy to confuse. The real difference is in how they work: a hamam is one set sequence you go through, a spa is usually a choice of treatments.
In short
A Turkish bath (hamam) is a set ritual in a warm, wet, marble room: you warm up, an attendant scrubs you with a kese mitt, washes you in foam and massages you. A spa is usually booked by the treatment, and what it offers varies from one spa to the next. The hamam programme booked on this site also includes a sauna, a steam room, an oil massage of about 20 minutes and a round-trip hotel transfer, from €25 per adult.
The short answer
A hamam is a sequence. You go through the same stages in order — heat, scrub, foam, massage, rest — and an attendant does the work. You don't pick treatments from a list; the programme is the point.
A spa is usually organised the other way round: you choose a treatment, book it, and that treatment is what you get. What is on offer, how long it takes and what it costs are up to each spa.

The hamam column describes the basic programme booked on this site; the exact order and timing can vary with the hamam and how busy the session is. We don't describe other businesses' treatments or prices.
What makes a hamam different
Two things: the kese scrub and the foam wash. The kese mitt and the foam wash are what set a Turkish bath apart from a sauna or a steam room, and they are the heart of every visit on this site.
The setting is different too. A hamam is warm, wet and marble; a sauna is hot and dry; a steam room is warm and saturated with steam. On this programme you use the sauna and steam room as the warm-up, then move to the marble for the scrub and the foam.
And there is the tradition. Bathing like this goes back a long way in this part of the world, and the hamam became part of Ottoman social life, a place to meet as much as a place to wash. More in our guide to what a Turkish bath is.
Hamam or a massage?
If it is a massage you are after, the hamam programme already contains two: the foam massage that follows the kese, and an aromatic oil massage of about 20 minutes. A standalone, longer or upgraded massage is not sold on this site. How the two differ is laid out in the foam massage guide.
If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor first and tell the hamam before your session.
A hamam visit or your hotel's spa?
On our side, a hamam visit booked here is one fixed programme. You are collected from your hotel and brought back in an air-conditioned vehicle that may carry other guests, the visit takes about 2.5–3 hours door to door, you pay at the hamam on the day, in cash or by card, and cancelling is free up to 24 hours before your visit.
If your hotel has a spa, what it offers, when and at what price is up to the hotel, so ask there. The choice then comes down to purpose: the whole hamam sequence of heat, kese, foam and massage with the transfer arranged, or the single treatment you had in mind.
Choosing between the two
Put simply, the hamam gives you the whole sequence in one visit, while a spa usually lets you pick a single treatment. Anything outside the basic programme, such as a longer massage, a mask or drinks, is not sold on this site.
